WAGES & SALARIES INCREASES - 2004

Cabinet, at its meeting of Tuesday, November 23, 2004, granted increases in wages, salaries, pension and public assistance respectively with effect from January 1, 2004.

Cabinet has granted a 5% across the board increase for public servants, teachers and members of the Disciplined Forces.

Cabinet also granted a 5% increase of the Old Age Pension and of the Public Assistance being provided to eligible Guyanese. Those increases will be effective from January 1, 2005.

PARLIAMENT

On Monday, November 29, 2004, Parliament will be meeting and be debating the Amendments to the Financial Act and the Bank of Guyana Act.

Passage and enactment of those Amendments would close the loopholes in the Financial Act that allowed the Globe Trust Debacle that robbed thousand of depositors of their hard earned savings.

Directors and employees of Globe Trust borrowed from Globe Trust to acquire holding in Globe Trust.

The Bank of Guyana Amendments seek to simplify the role of Regulator (BoG) in its response to Financial institutions in crisis.

The Administration has also presented for discussions, two (2) Motions, one to render public access to the sittings of Parliamentary Bodies and the other to give effect to certain initiatives to address, in a timely way, electoral reform for National/Regional Elections. At that sitting, a Bill to raise the Age of Consent to sixteen (16) years recently approved by Cabinet, would be tabled.
