WATER STREET VENDORS

Cabinet noted the continuing episodes of the Water Street vendors and the City Council’s contributions to bring closure to street vending.

The State acquired the Water Street site eventually bringing to an end the delays in the implementation of Government’s plans to address the issue.

The timing of the acquisition was fortuitous as the City Council was also removing the stalls of vendors off the streets in commercial Georgetown.

Infrastructure works at the New vendors Arcade is being attended to and the process of allocation concluded.
-2-
The vendors have been relocated and the streets are once again streets.

Business houses on Water Street and in other streets in commercial Georgetown can look On appreciative of the new situation.

The City Council has been doing its part and the Administration has suggested clearly the basis of its support to the Municipality. KEEP THE STREET CLEAR.

PARLIAMENT

Parliament would be meeting on Wednesday, August 13, 2003, to consider a number of Bills taken for their first reading on Monday, August 4, 2003.

Important among those Bills are those on the Veterinary Sector and the Fiscal Amendment Bill.

The Bills are timely seeking to legislatively create the necessary conditions for which Guyanese have opted to support.

* Improving Animal Husbandry and its
export potential;

* Enhancing transparency and accountability in the Tax System.
-2-

Parliament is expected to go in its Annual Recess after this sitting and session will not recommence until later in October this year.

“WAR AGAINST MANNERS” CAMPAIGN

A strong and unequivocal welcome was given by Cabinet to the start of the campaign against Bad Manners.

The lead role by the Tourism Authority, the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce and the University of Guyana Tourism Studies Unit was recognised and highlighted in the current campaign.

Cabinet was informed about the details of the 1st phase six (6) months long activity that would address the improvement of manners by Guyanese in the streets and in offices.

Both sectors providing services to Guyanese and tourists (Public and Private Sector) would receive the attention of the campaigners.

VISIT TO BRAZIL

The visit to Brazil by President Bharrat Jagdeo and a ministerial team concentrated on “Integration”.

This was the disclosure made to Cabinet during the discussions on the results of the visit.

The Brazil- Guyana Integration Project was the subject of discussion between the Public-Private set mix of Brazilian interests and the visiting Guyanese team.

The critical road project was again the subject of strong bilateral support by both countries.

That support mirrored that of the continental body established by the Presidents to deal with integration via infrastructural projects.
he northern axis through Brazil and Guyana enjoyed full support at that level.
