GUYEXPO 2005
The curtain came down on the Government of Guyana organised Guy Expo when the country witnessed a one weeklong national showcase of our economy and society at work.
Minister Nadir reported on the hosting, participation, problems that arose and the public reactions.
Cabinet expressed its congratulations to Minister Nadir, his Co-Chairman Mr. Keith Burrowes and the team of the organising committee and staff.
Attendance was up over by 40 percent over 2004. Some 95,000 persons attended Guy Expo. It was an event that showed the national spirit of industry, pride and unity as people from all corners of our country and all walks of life came to Guy Expo.
The Government, cognizant of the challenges in 2004 and against time in 2005, worked hard to address those issues. Over 10 million dollars was spent to make new accesses and exits, for parking and for internal roads. The emphasis was on a better experience for all. This was accomplished.
Cabinet expressed views on additional areas for attention for the next Guy Expo.
As I said last year, the National Exhibition Centre at Sophia is our permanent Exhibition Site.
The Government is committed to making this site and this Exhibition is one that is comparable to international standards.
RETURN OF DEMOCRACY 2005
October 5, 2005, was the 13th Anniversary of the October 5, 1992, the return of democracy and the victory of the PPP/C at the General/Regional Election.
The Anniversary was highlighted by county symposia hosted by the governing PPP/C Administration. Leading members of the Party and Administration addressed audiences in Berbice, Demerara and Essequibo.
The dominant theme was accounting for its stewardship honouring the commitments to democratic renewals.
The conditions established that the commitment to Return to Democracy made in 1992 by the PPP/C has been met in a consistent way over the period to 2005.
The presentation also noted the emphasis on deepening the content of democracy in Guyana while drawing attention to the internal and external shocks that continue to challenge and threaten the strengthening of democracy by the PPP/C Administration.
PARLIAMENT
The Parliament Recess will end on October 10, 2005.
The upcoming session is likely to be the last for the 8th Parliament that had began life in 2001 after the General Election.
The PPP/C Administration has a significant Agenda for the consideration of Parliament with legislative activity dominating.
The Administration is finalising the preparation of legislation for Parliament considerations in the following areas:
1. Finance
2. Human Services
3. Labour
4. Health
5. Forestry
6. External Relation
7. Amerindian Affairs
8. Local Government, among others.
Additionally, the Administration would continue its commitment to improving the Oversight Role of Parliament by continuing its engagements with the significant stakeholders on implementing an agreed upon Action Plan.
